Nantucket faces car issue head on
People who support the car cap say Nantucket’s roads were not built for the vehicle volume they now bear. The steadily growing number of cars, they say, creates gridlock downtown, as well as a general safety hazard.
Opponents argue that restricting vehicle access would itself create an inconvenience that could deter tourism. Some seasonal residents also protest the possibility they wouldn’t get permits - even though they’re taxpayers - because they register their cars to a permanent residence off-island.
