For tourists seeking solitude, Nantucket in the off-season offers serenity, heavily discounted rooms and desolate walking paths.

The waves of tourists and suntan oil recede each winter, leaving behind what once was: a small island town 35 serene miles out to sea.

The cobblestone Main Street — teeming with shoppers each summer — is empty. The 80 miles of beaches ringing this crescent-shaped spit of sand are deserted also, except for scallop shells and squawking birds.

Nantucket faces car issue head on

People who support the car cap say Nantucket’s roads were not built for the vehicle volume they now bear. The steadily growing number of cars, they say, creates gridlock downtown, as well as a general safety hazard.

Opponents argue that restricting vehicle access would itself create an inconvenience that could deter tourism. Some seasonal residents also protest the possibility they wouldn’t get permits - even though they’re taxpayers - because they register their cars to a permanent residence off-island.

NANTUCKET, Mass. - In spring, along with the daffodils, crowds on the ferry and workers raking the beaches, comes the ritual of real estate gossip. What properties changed hands over the winter? And who could possibly be paying those out-of-sight prices?

That 15-acre waterfront parcel for sale for $15 million? It was snatched up after only one day on the market. Turns out the purchaser was Steven Rales, the billionaire entrepreneur who owns at least 61 acres next door and bought the parcel to protect his privacy and waterfront views, said Dalton Frazier, a local real estate agent.
