Thanksgiving on Island
The Wampanoag Indians were the original inhabitants of Nantucket Island. When English colonists arrived on the island in 1659, they found more than 2,500 Wampanoags living here. The largest concentration of Native American place names in the country is on Nantucket. Translated, Nantucket means "far away land" in the Wampanoag dialect. Native American groups throughout the America's organized harvest festivals, ceremonial dances, and other celebrations of thanks for centuries before the arrival of Europeans in North America. Our Thanksgiving today stems from an autumn feast held in 1621 by the Pilgrims and Wampanoags. |

| NOTES FROM PEPPER THE ELDER |
Quiet Time on the Island
As Nantucket property buyers are more and more affluent, it appears that the 'season' is getting shorter. My diagnosis is that current home buyers have a multitude of houses and do not care to spend the spring and autumn in Nantucket. This is not good news; particularly for those in the retail business. With per square foot prices higher than Newbury Street, we need commercial traffic in the shoulder seasons. I think it is imperative that we shop locally as much as we can. So I say go out and buy, buy on the Island. And no, my wife did not write this. |
