Habitat for Humanity on Nantucket
Habitat for Humanity Nantucket (HFHN) was founded in 2004 on the belief that every family on Nantucket has the right to decent and affordable housing. HFHN actively pursues this mission by building and/or renovating sustainable homes with the help of volunteers, contributions of labor and materials, and the active participation of the Habitat family. Habitat is currently building it’s fourth project, a home at 46 Okorwaw Street near the airport. Volunteers range from skilled professionals in the building trades to the local high school construction program. The purchase price for the Habitat family is roughly equal to the total cost of construction. Habitat for Humanity Nantucket strives to keep the island whole by maintaining Nantucket's year-round community one house at a time. |

Nantucket Gift Basket Company
Imagine walking into your rental house after a long travel day. Dropping your bags in the entryway and checking out your new home for a week. Your eye roams around the space, and you see a welcome basket, bottle of wine, fresh flowers, baked good, and a note left specifically for your arrival. Wow, what a welcoming experience! As an owner, this is a really nice and fairly inexpensive thing to do for a tenant to welcome them to your home. The gesture could be as easy as putting a few bottles of wine and corresponding notes in a locked owners closet and asking the cleaner/caretaker to put one out before each tenant, or there are several island companies who can facilitate a custom gift basket. This sort of thing makes a property extra memorable and can help facilitate repeat rentals. |

The Sealed Bid
Let's see. Where were we? Oh, yeah, auctions. We covered the rudiments of the "open air", or the basic, common auction with which we are most familiar, both absolute and reserve. The less used auction is the sealed bid. A common misconception is that the sealed bid is opened at a lawyer's office, generally in front of the bidders. While this method is quite common, the Auctioneer can open the bids in private, and not reveal the contents. At his discretion, he can decide they are all inadequate, for whatever reason. He is not bound to take the highest bid; however, again at his discretion, he can decide the bids are so close that he wants them re-bid. Of course, he must follow, specific instructions from the Seller. |
