GROUND NOTES FROM DALTON
The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming

Did you know the movie The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming, which is based off Nathaniel Benchley's book, The Off-Islanders, is about a Soviet submarine that runs ashore in 'Sconset? And, Nathaniel Benchley's son, Peter Benchley wrote, Jaws, which was the story of the epic great white shark terrorizing Nantucket, which was subsequently made into a movie filmed on the Vineyard. Any ways, the Russians are not coming right now, because they are enjoying some Ruskova at the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

However, the Nantucket builders are coming (they've actually arrived). The amount of construction on Island is shocking. Get ready for these numbers...

The total number of building permits issued:

2004 – 1455
2005 – 1420
2006 – 1446
2007 – 1385
2008 – 1119
2009 – 1013
2010 – 1128
2011 – 1339
2012 – 1565
2013 – 1714

I imagine the 2014 number is going to be similar to 2013, which was the highest number ever. Logically so, these numbers follow how the market is doing; less building permits, weaker market; more building permits, stronger market.

So, if 2014 is going to be similar to 2013, then I wonder how the 2014 market is going to be?

Pass the Ruskova, this is going to be fun!!!

RENTAL MARKET UPDATE
  Nantucket in February

People think that February is cold, windy, and bleak and that there is nothing to do on Nantucket. While we have had our share of cold weather, we have also enjoyed some beautiful sunny snow days and island activities. The February 14th weekend, many of the shops will be open for sales of up to 75% off! We also look forward to the winter short play series, auditions for a new upcoming movie being filmed on island and Town is busy with construction of new water/sewer lines in some areas and on a few highly anticipated new restaurants slotted for Spring opening. The brewery continues to be busy brewing winter beers and hosting local entertainment, Bartlett's Farm is offering its winter Farm Talk series with local chefs, the artisan's association offers winter painting and clay classes and locals enjoy $5.00 burger, trivia and bingo nights. In keeping with the New Years resolution tradition many islanders are enjoying winter memberships at The Westmoor Club and The Nantucket Hotel.

Those of us who are here for the winter are enjoying the peace and quiet, the beauty of the winter and all that the island has to offer in the off season! Perhaps a little off season Nantucket might work it's magic on you as well? Come for a visit and see why the locals love it here year round!

NOTES FROM PEPPER THE ELDER
  Old Florida

It's always interesting to get someone else's perception on a subject to which you're very familiar. Much like de Tocqueville's take on American Democracy. Such was the case this week when a very close friend from Charleston visited Boca Grande. He's probably the largest commercial property owner in downtown Charleston, so he knows his way around the block. His enthusiasm knew no bounds: 'I'd forgotten how incredibly beautiful this place was.' And indeed it is. People are knocked over when they visit Boca Grande for the first time; they simply don't realize that a laid back old Florida fishing village still exists. It's not for the Black Tie Crowd. I certainly count myself lucky for having Boca Grande, Nantucket and Bermuda as the three places I most frequent. Did I mention I like islands?

Also these wonderful spots hold their real estate values much better than their more mundane, cookie cutter counterparts. Now, with my Charleston buddy, off to Useppa Island, another cool spot, for lunch.
