GROUND NOTES FROM DALTON
  Share the Wealth

My dad and I drove by the Boys and Girls Club yesterday. The B&G Club is planning a major addition and has torn part of their building down already to make room for the addition. My dad said, "I can't believe the Club has the money to do that project." I said, "Dad, all they have to do is have a few fundraisers and they'll get the money." He said, "I guess you are right." One of the headlines this week on the front page of the Inky says, "Atheneum raises $10 million for endowment". The examples go on and on. The fundraising capabilities of this little island are extraordinary. Now that summer is in full swing, it means the fundraising season is in full swing. Every week I get at least two invites to fundraisers. They are all great causes, so it is hard to pick and choose. Everyone has their favorites, though, so most reach their financial goals fairly handily. The generosity of year-round and summer residents alike is yet another example of why Nantucket is such a special place.

RENTAL MARKET UPDATE
  The Kiddos

Are you contemplating renting but wondering what to do with the kids? While you may have heard Nantucket referred to as "adult Disneyland", the island is certainly a child's playground as well. Rent bikes and explore the miles and miles of bike trails, explore the sea creatures on the Critter Cruise, visit Maria Mitchell's observatory for star gazing, or simply delight in a beach day. The list of things to do goes on and on... In addition, several children's camps take place during the day including fashion camp, nature camp, surf camp, lacrosse camp, and many many more. The bottom line is the kids will not be bored with a trip out to sea to ACK. The only potential problem may be finding the perfect balance of action and relaxation. But do not worry, there are plenty of on-island babysitters to help as well. If you haven't already done so, tell the kids you're venturing to Nantucket, a vacationers paradise!

NOTES FROM PEPPER THE ELDER
  Harold Stassen

Well I have three hours a day more than last year to do 'stuff.' Why? Because I don't watch the Red Sox. I saw them in spring training and I said 'Jackie Bradley Jr., you've got to be kidding.' He is about as qualified to play center field in the 'Bigs' as certain politicians are to serve in government (The Littles). Turning to real estate, and I don't mean center field, Nantucket is hot. Really hot. So are Boston and New York. The Chinese are parking money anywhere but China. They particularly like New York, but have a fondness for Boston because so many of them went to school there, and have also been treated in the various hospitals, M.G.H. in particular. Generally speaking, people don't realize that Nantucket's main audience is Boston and environs. So a good Boston real estate market is a good Nantucket market. Do you think it's too late to bring back Fred Lynn? Or Harold Stassen, for that matter.
