GROUND NOTES FROM DALTON
  Never a Dull Moment

Nantucket residents, vacation and year-round, are passionate about Nantucket. Residents work hard to protect the Grey Lady. That is why over half the island is conservation land, why we have the Historic District Commission and why there are so many fundraisers. So, if you are going to do something that is sure to ruffle some feathers, be ready. Recently, a developer wanted to move historic buildings off a property on North Liberty Street. Whoa - the neighborhood went bonkers! The developer is waiting to hear from the HDC if his application gets approved, but if it does, I can't imagine it won't get appealed and I can't imagine he won’t need an armored car.

Another hot topic has been where a new hospital would go. After ruling out one site, the Board of Selectman asked the hospital to review another site that is currently a Town owned park and popular sledding hill, Mill Hill Park. Unless you are looking to get tomatoes thrown at you, don't suggest allowing a private company to develop a Town of Nantucket park. So, if you think NCIS is good, wait until you read The Inquirer and Mirror.

NOTES FROM PEPPER THE ELDER
I Got a Brand New Bicycle

An amusing little tidbit; To me at least. Phil Esposito, who lives on Boca Grande, was rumored to have been caught by his wife in flagrante delicto on his boat with three females. As punishment, Mrs. Esposito took away his boat. All I could think of: How fortunate for Phil he wasn't caught on his bicycle. OK. OK. Enough already.

I think this is going to be the year Nantucket separates itself from the rest of the pack. Vacant land is getting so very tough to find and spec builders are more avaricious than ever. It all adds up to higher and higher prices. Most places get worse, Nantucket gets better. So you can take those bon mots and stuff them in your pipe.

Is that Phil Esposito I see walking down the bike path?
