Oh, the Weather Outside is Frightful

But the market is so delightful... This really is a win-win market. Sellers can get strong numbers and Buyers have extra purchasing power from the 25% stock market run and the ultra low interest rates.

If the $37.5mm sale of 6 Sun Island Road (Nantucket Storage Center) is included (and affordable housing excluded), 2017 sales were just over $1.03bn. I think the Sun Island sale should be partially included because the deal included the real estate, 1.7 acres in 5,000 sf zoning, and it was a market trade. If you back out the value of the business (I'm not privy to details of the deal, so don't know exactly), then '17 sales would be $1bn MOL.

Wishing everyone a healthy, happy, peaceful and prosperous New Year (and that you're a Boston sports' fan).

He was my friend. That was my good fortune. What does that have to do with real estate, you might ask? A legitimate question and the answer is that he and his brothers were the largest private land owners on Nantucket. Land that through their good graces and a contribution from The Conservation Foundation will be 'forever wild.'

In actuality, I wanted an excuse to briefly write about him. He grew up in St. Louis, where he was an all-around star, both scholastically and athletically, at Saint Louis Country Day. Much to his chagrin, he was up-rooted and sent to Hotchkiss where he again excelled, co-captaining, along with fellow Nantucketer Steve O'Brien, their near perfect varsity football team. Nantucket may be where all the trouble started, because he was my friend, and mischief and hedonism were thine middle names. He matriculated to Columbia where he discovered the wonders of the East End Bar, along with Bennet, Briarcliff and Bradford. The Killer B's. He also was good enough at fullback and middle linebacker to get a tryout with the Giants. I was lucky enough to have him join me in Cambridge. He at Harvard Business School and, I, just trudging along as an undergraduate. It was great, because, as I believe I've said, he was my buddy and we would go to Nantucket every week for 3 or 4 days. Not bad work, if you can find it. People say how could you take so much time off from school. The answer is quite simple. Don't attend in the first place.

For the most part, we both settled in Boston, with New York stints here and there. Libby and I have a son, Pepper II, and he was his Godfather. He got married in Charleston S.C., which I thought was a mistake and told him so, saying 'call it off.' To which he said, with an incredulous, if not sardonic, grin: 'What! And miss a good party.' Well, the party went on; the marriage did not. He was my friend and I will sorely miss him.
