The oldest part of the house was built before 1750 and is believed to have been moved to its current location from the original island settlement of Sherburne. It was later home to a series of island families including Primary Mariner Solomon Smith in the early 1800s. A well-known Nantucket basket maker, Ferdinand Sylvaro, also lived and worked at 97 Orange Street in the first part of the 20th century; the address is noted on the labels on his very collectible baskets. While the house has been expanded and renovated over the years, it still retains much of its historic island charm and character.
