Life on Nantucket Island

Stories and Articles About Year-Round Island Living

My dad and I drove by the Boys and Girls Club yesterday. The B&G Club is planning a major addition and has torn part of their building down already to make room for the addition. My dad said, “I can’t believe the Club has the money to do that project.” I said, “Dad, all they have to do is have a few fundraisers and they’ll get the money.” He said, “I guess you are right.” One of the headlines this week on the front page of the Inky says, “Atheneum raises $10 million for endowment”. The examples go on and on. The fundraising capabilities of this little island are extraordinary. Now that summer is in full swing, it means the fundraising season is in full swing. Every week I get at least two invites to fundraisers. They are all great causes, so it is hard to pick and choose. Everyone has their favorites, though, so most reach their financial goals fairly handily. The generosity of year-round and summer residents alike is yet another example of why Nantucket is such a special place.
